Cheer up a T-shirt with embroidery

How to instructions

  • 1

Secure the embroidery hoop where you want to embroider. Make sure the fabric is nice and taut.

  • 2

Print, trace or plan a pattern. You can trace the pattern directly on the fabric with a pencil, or embroider free-hand.

  • 3

When working freeform, try using a variety of embroidery stitches. Download the overview below where you can see all of the stitches we used. Here’s what we embroidered:

  • 4

The large rose was embroidered with a woven wheel stitch (image 3) and the other big flower with French knots in the middle (image 1) and satin stitch (image 4) petals all around.

  • 5

The small flowers have French knots at the centre (image 1) and loop stitches (image 5), or simple straight stitches all the way around.

  • 6

The stems were embroidered in stem stitch (image 2).

Thread the needle, let go of the day and get creative with free-hand embroidery! This way, you don’t have to count the exact number of threads or stitches. If you have a stain or maybe a small hole in a shirt, you can easily spruce it up with embroidery. One tip is to base your embroidery on a design drawn straight on the fabric or on water-soluble interfacing. Then fill the pattern with different stitches and techniques. Download the description to see which stitches we used.
