Ice-dye your sneakers

Ice-dye your sneakers

How to instructions

  • 1

Remove the shoelaces and apply masking tape around the rubber soles to prevent dye from staining them. Protect the insides of your sneakers with plastic wrap as well.

  • 2

Cover your work surface with plastic sheeting.

  • 3

Place a wire rack on top of a large plastic tub. Place the sneakers on the wire rack.

  • 4

Cut out a cardboard frame and use it to frame the sneakers. Secure the frame with a paper clip or paper clamp. Then pile chunks of ice onto the sneakers. The purpose of the frame is to keep the ice on the sneakers.

  • 5

Sprinkle dye powder from the bottle over the chunks of ice. Feel free to mix different colours.

  • 6

Let the ice melt over the sneakers; the melted water will dye the fabric. Leave the sneakers in place until all the ice has melted, then let them dry.

  • 7

Spray the sneakers with a fabric-dye sealant and youre ready to show off your unique ice-dyed sneakers to the world!

Ice-dye your canvas plimsolls for a colourful transformation. With this technique, you'll be using chunks of ice and fabric dye in powder form to dye the fabric. Sprinkle dye powder over ice chunks, then let the ice do the work. As it melts, it will dye the fabric with beautiful, watercolour-esque/galaxy patterns. Use a lot of dye powder for brightly dyed shoes, and less for more pastel shades. You don't have to use the entire bottle of powder for one pair of plimsolls; that would be too much. But go ahead and blend different colours to create cool results.
