Counting with an octopus

How to instructions

  • 1

Cut 8 equal pieces of string and cut out two semi-circles in self-adhesive craft rubber.

  • 2

Remove the plastic from the craft rubber and attach the 8 pieces of string along the straight edge of one semi-circle. Attach the other semi-circle on top.

  • 3

Apply self-adhesive numbers, 1 through 8, above each string.

  • 4

Thread 1 to 8 beads onto the string at the respective number. Tie a knot at the end of each string at the same height.

  • 5

Make eyes and a smiling mouth out of craft rubber.

Make learning how to count fun with this happy octopus! To each string, we've attached the number of beads indicated by the number above. The kids can count the beads by moving one bead at a time up towards the number, giving them a visual understanding of the value of each number. Simply put: a fun, slightly different abacus!
