Crackle glaze can be used with hobby paint and acrylic paint, as well as metallic colours like gold and silver. Start by painting the background, i.e., the colour that will appear in the cracks. Let dry. Then brush with crackle glaze; a thick layer will produce large cracks while a thin one will produce smaller cracks. Let dry for at least 2 hours; the glaze should not feel wet. Next, apply your chosen colour on top of the glaze. Paint with a wide brush and no more than maybe twice in the same place; the paint will begin to crack fairly quickly and the background colour will emerge. Crackling produces a very striking effect and is a fun addition to mixed media techniques.
