Embroidery on clay

How to instructions

  • 1

Take a nice big lump of clay and knead it together.

  • 2

Roll the clay into a cylinder.

  • 3

Place the cylinder with the bottom facing down and shape it into a pot by pressing your fingers into the middle, and then outwards and upwards. Add a little water as you go, because the clay may dry out somewhat while you work. Make the walls and bottom about 1 cm thick.

  • 4

When the bowl is done, loosen it with a clay cutter. Carefully pull the wire along the table to loosen the underside of the bowl.

  • 5

Let the pot dry completely. The drying time depends on how thick the clay is and the room temperature. It may take a few days for it to dry completely. Place the pot on a rack or a few wooden sticks so that air can get underneath, which will help it dry.

  • 6

If you like, sand the dry pot at the top with sandpaper to smooth the edges.

  • 7

Drill small holes with a manual clay drill or a drill.

  • 8

Use a needle to thread little tufts of yarn through the holes. Glue the tufts of yarn to the inside of the pot.

  • 9

Divide the yarn threads from the outside to make the tufts nice and fluffy.

  • 10

Paint the inside of the pot with white paint to conceal the yarn attachments.

Combine different materials to create your own unique interior design details. Clay and yarn together – what fantastic things will you make with them? How about an adorable little pot or bowl like this one? Bear in mind that this clay is not watertight, so you’ll have to use your pot with dry plants, or just enjoy it as it is.
